Red squirrels are native to Britain but now mainly live in Scotland and Northern England largely due to the introduction of grey squirrels imported from North America in the 1870s and the loss of their woodland habitat. Grey squirrels carry a virus fatal to red squirrels and deplete food sources for red squirrels. Although red squirrels bury food for winter they don’t hibernate. Red squirrels are strong swimmers. Baby squirrels are called kittens.
